The DVD Burner goes very slow (Problem)

Thursday, by civis

Some people have told to me that sometimes their burner takes an eternity to record a single disc, with transfer rates of 500 KB/s ( at best ). Most programs will tell you that they are recording at specified speed, but it is false, this programs only show the record speed selected by the user. For example with CBurner you can see the real transfer rate to the burner ;-). When this happen the time required for burn a single DVD exceed 30 - 40 minutes (Normal are 13-14 minutes for a 4X burner).

The root of the problem in most of these cases is the actual transfer mode is selected to PIO when it should be DMA. And this is achieved in the following manner:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  3. Right-click the controller that you want to configure DMA/PIO settings for, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
  5. In the Transfer Mode box, click DMA if available.

Typically, this make the burner to go fast again, but if you cannot change to DMA, the solution is to remove the device and restart Windows.
